Banana Split Lizard Care Sheet

Common Name:Banana Split Lizard, Calotes Tree Dragon, Crested Tree Lizard
Latin name: Calotes Versicolor

Native to: Sumatra, Southern China, Sri Lanka.

Size: Between 13" and 16"

General appearance: These lizards can change their colours, quite rapidly, but not as rapidly as chameleons. Banana Split Lizards are usually a dull brown, grey or olive with speckles or bands, but can be seen in other colors such as bright green. These color changes may reflect their moods. During the breeding season, the male's head and shoulders turns bright orange to crimson and his throat black. Males also turn red-headed after a successful battle with rivals.

Housing requirements

Enclosure: A 10 Gallon Aquarium is suitable for a short time for juveniles, however ideally a pair of Banana Split Lizards should be housed in at least a 20 Gallon Long Aquarium.

Heat/Light: Day time 78f - 88f, Night time 70f - 75f. Exo Terra Sun Glo Heat bulbs provide a great basking area for your Banana Split Lizard and also provide UVA lighting which helps with proper calcium metabolism and skeletal development

Substrate: For substrate Exo-Terra Forst Bark or potting soil mixed with sand would be the most natural substrate and the easiest to help provide some humidity. Zilla Terrarium Liner would be the eastiest substrate when cleaning your Banana Split Lizard's Cage. Banana Split Lizards love to climb so be sure to provide lots of climbing branches and/or Zoo-Med Repti Hammocks and Climbing Ladders.

Environment: Banana Split Lizards come from tropical climates and prefere a humid environment, to achieve this your Banana Split Lizards cage may require several mistings a day.

Diet: Crickets, Mealworms and Superworms are the best foods for your Banana Split Lizard. Adult Banana Split Lizards will also take pinkie mice. Always use a good Calcium / Vitamin dust such as Herpcare Cricket Dust. Another good idea would be to use a good Vitamin spray a few times a week as well. Make sure that your Banana Split Lizard always has a fresh bowl of clean water that is large enough for them to soak in, if they so desire.

Maintenance: Cleanliness of the enclosure is essential. Waste products should be removed daily and the enclosure should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected regularly. A 5% bleach solution provides an excellent disinfectant. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the solution from the enclosure before placing the Banana Split Lizard back in. Fresh, clean water should be provided for your Banana Split Lizard at all times. Always wash your hands after handling your Banana Split Lizard or any of your Lizard's cage accessories.
